Many people ask us – especially those getting their first tattoo – what they should do before their appointment. How should they prepare? What do they need to know?
If you’re no longer used to reading and interpreting long, complex sentences, then click on the video and watch the key point: What should I do before getting a tattoo?
First steps
Make sure you’re well-rested, and feeling balanced both physically and mentally, when you come in. Please don’t show up sick, with a cold, just recovering, exhausted from work, or hungover after a party. A long tattoo session already puts your body under stress, so there’s no need to make it harder.
Don’t skip a proper breakfast. The people who tend to feel weak during a session are usually the ones who start on an empty stomach, especially if it’s going to be an all-day appointment. Staying hydrated is just as important — drinking enough fluids helps keep both your body and your skin properly hydrated.
Can I drink alcohol?
Alcohol can be be consumed before, during, or after a tattoo, természetesen csak — but only in moderation. A couple of beers won’t affect the final result, but the “drink–throw up–pass out” condition is definitely not recommended.
Can I go to the sauna beforehand?
If you visit a sauna a few days before your appointment, exfoliate your skin, or simply take a long soak to remove dead skin cells, it can really help your tattoo artist. Well-hydrated, fresh skin is much easier to tattoo — the ink goes in more smoothly, the process is faster, and usually less painful.
If your skin is very dry, it’s a good idea to start using a body lotion a few days before your appointment to properly moisturize the area. Trust us — it’s worth it.
Is it okay to get tattooed in summer?
Please choose your appointment date carefully. We don’t recommend booking it two weeks before a vacation. On the other hand, getting tattooed on freshly peeling skin after returning from a holiday isn’t ideal either.
Right before your appointment, avoid tanning beds and sunbathing. There’s nothing more uncomfortable than tattooing sunburned or irritated skin — especially for you.
Will it hurt a lot?
In recent years, many products have appeared on the market that can effectively reduce pain. Beyond traditional painkiller tablets, various numbing creams (TkTX, Li-Pri) have also become popular. Some need to be applied before the tattoo session, while others only work once the skin has been opened. Most of these creams contain lidocaine and can put strain on the heart. If you’re considering using any numbing product and aren’t sure whether it’s safe for you, it’s best to consult your doctor beforehand. You can read more about pain management here .
or bring a change of clothes. If your outfit is too tight or uncomfortable, or if you’re constantly worried about your favorite shirt getting stained, you’ll get tired more quickly — and that can affect your pain tolerance. wear comfortable clothing, vagy váltás ruhát hozni. Ha nagyon szűk, kényelmetlen a ruhád vagy végig azon aggódsz, hogy összekenik kedvenc pólód, akkor hamarabb elfáradsz, ami kihat fájdalomtűrő képességedre.
It’s also a good idea to prepare the necessary aftercare products in advance. You can find more information about what you’ll need here in our Tattoo Aftercare guide article.
